This is a world in which identical twins are the norm, and twins have a magical link between them. Triplets and Quadruplets are even more powerfully linked.
They believe the transporter pads are a "circle of evil" and keep constant watch on it with a set of quadruplets (two visible, two hidden). This is probably due to Maarden warning them long ago that bad things could come from them.
